Obituary

Funeral services for Elaine Larson age 82 of Mound City will be 10:30 AM Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Norway Lutheran Church rural Glenham. Visitation will be Friday, February 24, 2017 from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. At Elaine request cremation will take place after the service. Elaine passed away Monday, February 20, 2017, at Mobridge Regional Hospital.

Heaven gained its newest resident artist when Edythe Elaine (Thybo) Larson, 82, of Mound City passed away on Monday, February 20, 2017. Elaine was born on September 10, 1934, on the Bar H Ranch, north of Reva, SD to James and Mary (Wicks) Thybo. She attended school at Rock Ranch, Belle Fourche and Bison where she graduated in 1952.


In the Bison area she worked various jobs including teaching in the one-room school house at Stony Butte in rural Perkins County, co-owned Marge and Elaine's Style Shop, worked for the Perkins County Treasurer's Office and Grand Electric.


On Valentine's Day, 1952, she had her first date with the love of her life, LeVern Larson. On June 5, 1955 they were married at the American Lutheran Church in Bison and continued to date regularly.


The Larson's moved to Mound City in 1963. They co-owned a grocery store, Larson's Market, with Basil and Jane Larson, later becoming sole proprietors. During her 32 years of managing the market, Elaine also learned how to be a farmer's wife which included operating most of the machinery.

She was Campbell County's only Food Stamp Cashier, Postmaster Relief for the Mound City Post Office, utilities clerk for the Town of Mound City, served on the Farmerette's Extension Club, Fair Valley Garden Club, Christian Women's and was a proud member of the Mound City Volunteer Fire Department and Norway Lutheran Church where she her influence can be seen adorning the walls and also served as deacon. She liked to paint, write cowboy poetry, listen to LeVern sing, spend time at their cabin in Whitewood and drink coffee. Her artistry can be seen throughout the community including the Mound City post office, centennial memorabilia, hay bales, rocks, driftwood, saws and many canvasses


Elaine loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and many friends and neighbors. She was a 20-year breast cancer survivor and also survived a house fire and an attack of a 1,000# hay bale.


She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 62 years, her children Bradly LeVern (Lynn) Larson of Spearfish, Rock (Ruby) Larson of Sioux Falls, TJ (Robin) Larson of Lead, Crystal (Tyrone) Burgad of Mandan, ND and Neoma (Gary) Harris of Chamberlain, fourteen grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, one brother, Arlo "Buck" Thybo of Sundance, WY; sister, Marie (Jim) Donohue of Newell, SD; a special cousin, Lorraine Fuller and many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by a baby boy born in 1958, her parents, her sister and brother-in-law Marge and Floyd Wulf of Vale, SD.
