Eileen passed away Thursday, October 20, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Center in Selby.
Eileen Holder was born on a beautiful rainy day on June 22, 1931 to Jake and Bertha (Roebuck) Schaffer at the Mobridge Railroad Hospital. Dr. Twinning was the attending physician. Eileen was number two girl child in the family--her older sister Maurine being the only other child.
Although Eileen was born in the dirty thirties, she wanted for nothing, except maybe running water-mostly for the biffie. She remembered many cold nights running to the John-sometimes in the morning they would awaken to ice in the drinking water pail.
She attended all eight years of grade school education at the Kennedy School, which was 1/2 mile from where they lived. They had to furnish the drinking water so they always had a ride to school in the morning. Her dad, then would continue on the Mobridge where he sold whole milk to Swanson's Creamery for many years. After grade school she attended High School in Glenham, SD graduating in 1949 from a class of 17.
Eileen then worked in Mobridge at the Ben Franklin Store and also at the American Café for a short time. She then applied and received the job of Secretary to the County Agent, Arnold Rieckman and worked there until 1959.
Eileen married to John L. Holder on October 21, 1956, and they farmed west of Selby. Eileen began babysitting for eighteen years and then started working at the school lunchroom in Selby for 14 years and part-time kitchen aid at the Good Samaritan Home.
Eileen and John were raised in different religions so after making a home in Selby they both joined the Selby Methodist Church, all of the children were baptize and confirmed there. Eileen was involved in many of the churches activities, Methodist women, Sunday School teacher, bible study group and the church council.
Eileen and John enjoyed square dancing together in Mobridge, Selby and Mound City. Eileen hoped for many years of good health and time to travel and enjoy life with her family and friends.
Eileen is survived by her husband, John L. Holder of Selby, 2 daughters; Gayle (David) Kaup of Balaton, MN., and Beth (Gordon) Ripplinger of Bismarck, ND, also 2 sons; David J. (Cris) Holder of Selby, SD, and James Holder of Selby, SD. Grandchildren; Jennifer, Stephanie and Ryan Kaup, Tyler and Kaylee Ripplinger, Tiffany and Landon Holder and Derek and Adam Vigstol.
