Edward was born February 22, 1925 5 miles West of Green Grass to Andrew and Helen (Dupris) Larabee. He grew up on the family ranch. Attended Old Agency Boarding School from Kindergarten thru the 5th grade, St. Elizabeth Mission (Episcopalian Mission), Wakpala, Old Agency Public School until 8th grade.
Edward joined the United States Marine Corp on October 28th, 1943 during World War II and also served during the Japanese Occupation. Edward rode the bus to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to check in for duty and was transferred with other soon to be Marine's to Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA to complete boot camp. Ed shipped out on the USS Wasp for his tour of duty. While serving his country, Ed served on the Kinian Island, Okinawa and China for 6 months. During his deployment on Okinawa, Ed was shot during a gunnery battle and the closest medical attention he could receive was at an Army Medical station. Ed never received the honorary Purple Heart for being wounded during the war, because he was treated outside his branch. Upon his return from the war, Ed proudly remembers shipping home on the USS Missouri when he was honorably discharged April 4th, 1946.
In 1946 Ed began ranching upon his return from the war. On September 29, 1948 he married Evelyn Good Bear, they would go on to raise 8 children on the ranch.
In 1964 Ed and his brother purchased an old barracks from the Ellsworth Air Force Base, Ed gutted his half of the building and reconstructed it in to a 3-bedroom home while raising his eight children; however, he's very proud of his achievement of being a home owner he lived there until his Governor's house was moved next door in 2014.
Ed started with 10 head of calves. Ed participated in the tribal "owe" program, which purchased 25 head of cattle and the rancher had to pay the tribe back every penny. During the 80's, Ed dabbled in farming for about seven or eight years with wheat, barley, oats and corn crops. During the sixty years, Ed tells how he raised cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, chickens, turkeys and prairie dogs; a women stopped by at one time to ask him if she could vaccinate his dogs. He told her "Sure, I have a whole bunch of dogs you can vaccinate if you want too!" Of course, he was talking about the prairie dogs he jokes about raising.
Ed was very proud of his horse's, of course, he's retired racing horses many years ago and if you asked Ed about what kind of horses he raced, he'll say "Just my crow baits." On the Tree is where Ed calls home and ranches, located next to the Moreau River.
