Earl Louis Espeland was born on June 19, 1923 to Ingval and Hilda (Lund) Espeland at the family home in Campbell County north of Glenham, SD. He grew up on his parents' farm and attended the Amundson & Larson Schools. He spent his junior year of high school in Brookings, SD, and graduated from Glenham High School in 1941. He helped on the family farm before joining the US Marine Corps in September, 1945. He spent time in the Hawaiian Islands and was discharged on October 20, 1946. Following his discharge he returned to the family farm. On March 18, 1956, he married Violet Hanson at Norway Lutheran Church. Following their marriage, they made their home on the family farm where they farmed and raised their family. Some hobby interests included emus, guinea hens, and geese. Other than Violet, the love of his life was farming. At the time of his death Earl was a resident of the Selby Good Samaritan Center.
Earl was baptized and confirmed, and a very active member of Norway Lutheran Church. He sang in their choir, taught Sunday school, and served as an officer on the church council.
Earl enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, attending family reunions, and being outdoors. Earl and a friend, Walter Hohle, hunted deer in the Black Hills every November for 50 years. He could tell you many stories of the years growing up when neighborhood farmers got together to thresh grain, bundling and shocking the crop and bringing it all to the threshing machine where the final harvesting process took place.
Earl is survived by his children Robert (Lois ) Espeland of Denver, CO, Ronald (Rose) Espeland of Bismarck, ND, Debra (Mark) Grandgenett of Alexandria, MN, Kevin Espeland of Pierre, SD, Karen Espeland of Sioux Falls, SD, brother Marvin ( Beverley) Espeland of Rapid City, SD, and sisters Dorothy Espeland of San Francisco, CA, and Joyce (Don) Frevert of DesMoines, IA, 9 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.
