Funeral services for Duane Robert Miller, 81, Phoenix, AZ will be 1:00 PM Friday, May 18, 2018 at the Baptist Church in Isabel. Interment will be in the Hillview Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Visitation will be Friday at 11:00 AM until service time at the church. Duane passed away at the Surprise Memory Care Center in Surprise (Phoenix) AZ on May 6 th , 2018, from complications of Parkinson's.

Duane was born on May 4 th , 1937, to Jake and Gladys Miller in Isabel, SD. He was a man of many talents and worked at various occupations throughout his lifetime. He began his working career in heavy equipment operations and then the Homestake Gold Mine in the Lead, SD and on to Denver, CO. He then entered the US Army. After basic training he was stationed in Thule, Greenland for the remainder of his two-year stay. He then returned to South Dakota and worked on a ranch. He met Mary Schweitzer of Timber Lake, SD and they were married on July 18, 1959. They moved to Denver, CO where he managed Pete's Standard Service Station. In 1962 they moved back to SD and he managed the Sam Tidball Ranch just south of Isabel and they bought and managed the Isabel Café. On December 15 th , 1968, their son, Allen Dean was born. They sold the café and bought a ranch in the Meadow, SD area. In 1971 he bought the Stankey Ranch and the Bowding Ranch and ran cattle. In 1973 he moved to Pierre, SD where he was a Land Agent for the SD School and Public Lands and managed the Thrifty Scott Motel.   He owned and operated the Miller Implement in Miller, SD in 1979 until moving back to Pierre in 1983. There he and his son Allen bought houses and remodeled them to sell again. When the Rawhide Village was forced to evacuate just north of Gillette, WY, they purchased 5 of those homes. They moved them to Pierre, SD and placed them on foundations/basements and sold them. When finished, they moved to Gillette and bought a shop and fixed and repainted vehicles. He spent his later years living in Blunt, SD in the summers and Phoenix, AZ area in the winters with Allen and Li.   They stayed in Arizona fulltime for the last two years. He wasn't afraid to tackle any type of work and was very successful in all his endeavors.

Duane is survived by his son, Allen Dean (Li) of Wittman, AZ, his sisters, Karen (Jerry) Wanke of Gillette, WY and Connie (Walt) of Ft. Collins, CO, his sisters-in-law, Phyllis Miller of Isabel and Shirley Miller of Rapid City. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Eugene Miller of Isabel and Alvin Miller of Rapid City.
