Funeral Services for Dorothy Schulz age 84 of Gillette, Wyoming and formerly of McLaughlin are pending with Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Mrs. Schulz passed away on July 28 in Gillette.
Dorothy Mae Herron was born on July 11th, 1926 to Guy and Emily (Kalbus) Herron. She was baptized on July 19th, 1926 in Groton, SD. She grew up and attended Groton High School and graduated on May 23rd, 1944. After graduation she attended SDSU and graduated on July 16th, 1947 with a BS degree in Home Economics. She taught one year in Waubay, SD before taking a teachers position in McLaughlin, SD, where she taught for 37 of the 41 years of her teaching career. She also taught in Lemmon, SD, McIntosh, SD and Fort Yates, ND in between having her children.
While teaching in McLaughlin she met Elmer Schulz. They were married in Groton, SD on November 25th, 1951. The couple made their home in McLaughlin until their retirement in 1989 to Apache Junction, AZ. Elmer and Dorothy returned in the summers to Wall, SD where they both worked at Wall Drug. In 2004 they started dividing their time between Arizona and Gillette, WY.
Dorothy was a member of the Eastern Star, an EMT, Leader of FHA, a member of the Red Hatters Society, member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid, and a member of the Epiphany Lutheran Church in Arizona. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens Band in McLaughlin, SD and Apache Junction, AZ, playing the washboard with a wooden spoon.
While teaching, she was involved in all activities at the McLaughlin School. She was a class advisor, enjoyed watching all sporting events, (she was a swim team "Mom"), and especially enjoyed the formal events of Prom and the Christmas Formal and annual Style Show, which she organized as the FHA leader.
Dorothy loved to sew, quilt, knit, crochet, read, play cards and gamble. She loved having her hair done. She enjoyed concerts, plays, and shows. She enjoyed traveling and the highlight of her life was her visit to Ireland; as it was her family's heritage. Dorothy always sent cards and never forgot birthdays or anniversaries.
Dorothy is survived by four sons; Tim (June) Schulz of Brandon, SD; Tony (Holly) Schulz and Troy (Gina) Schulz of Wall, SD; Guy Schulz of Apache Junction, AZ; five daughters; Melodee Bartsch, Spring (Gerald) Walker, Stacey (Kevin) Byrum all of Gillette, WY; Holly (Steve) Keller of Trail City, SD; Lisa (John) Ocilka, of Rapid City, SD, fifteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and one sister Lavohn Sieh of Aberdeen, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elmer, great-grandson Jackson Walker, and sisters; Betty Purcell and Darlene Crawford.
