Funeral services for Dorothy Espeland, age 84, of Glenham and formerly of San Mateo, CA, will be at 3:30 PM, Friday, June 24, 2011 at Norway Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Dorothy passed away Monday, June 20, 2011 at the Selby Good Samaritan Center in Selby.
Dorothy was the fourth child of Ingval and Hilda (Lund) Espeland. She was born on September 4, 1926 in Mobridge. Dorothy attended grade school at Larson, Amundson and Rabenberg Schools. She went to high school in Glenham and graduated in 1944. Dorothy went to the Bismarck School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse in Bismarck, Minneapolis and in California. She was trained as a stewardess for the United Airlines. Her career with United Airlines included flying long distance flights to Asia and Hawaii. During the Vietnam Conflict the airline flew troops and dependents to and from Vietnam; they would land in Saigon and Japan. She retired in 1988 after working 36 years for United Airlines and she continued to live in San Mateo, CA area. Following her retirement she still helped at the airport, volunteering as a travel aid. She loved to travel and visited Holland, Germany, Austria, China, Norway, Italy, England, Belgium, Australia, France, Alaska and Florida. In 2010 Dorothy moved into the Selby Good Samaritan Center where she has since resided.
Dorothy is survived by a brother, Marvin (Beverley) Espeland of Rapid City, sister, Joyce (Donald) Frevert of Clive, IA and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Earl Espeland, and sisters, Gladys Anderson and Ellen Wessel.
Casketbearers are her nieces and nephews, Lorraine Anderson, Bud Anderson, Ernest Anderson, Liz Arndt, Dale Anderson, Bob Espeland, Ron Espeland, Deb Grandgenett, Karen Espeland, Kevin Espeland, Diane Frevert, Chuck Frevert, Karen Nelsen, Nancy Frevert-Solohub, Virginia Espeland, Laura Linn, Linda Neff, Marsha Abrahamson and Roy Wessel.
Honorary bearers are the staff and her friends at the Selby Good Samaritan Center.
