Funeral services for Dorothy Brewer, 87 of Eagle Butte will be 10:00, Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at the UCC Church in Eagle Butte. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday. Burial will be at the Eagle Butte Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Mrs. Brewer passed away Thursday, June 16, 2011 at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck.
Dorothy Irene Joens Brewer was born July 6, 1923. She was the eleventh child of Hans and Alvena Schlie Joens. She was born on the Frank Naeve Homestead now owned by Dr. Upell. She attended eight years of the Eagle Butte School, staying with different families. She then went to work for Kate McCarthy and Lawrence Exe in the café until 1940. She then went to work at the Drug store for Fred and Inez Peterson.
In 1941 she married Harold Brewer and to this union 3 daughters; Charlotte Anne, 1943, Donna Marie, 1944 and LaVonne Kay, 1946, 1 son Dale Edward, 1947 were born. In 1944 Harold and Dorothy bought the M&E Café. In 1945 they had a chance to buy the Cal Ritchey Homestead, so they sold the café to Jim and Esther Anderson. They farmed, raised chickens, geese, hogs, sheep and milked several cows.
In 1963 Dorothy went to work at Edith and Joe Drwyers Café. In 1967 Dorothy went to work for Dot Naeve in the grocery store. She retired in 1984 and returned to work on the farm. In 1994 Dorothy suffered a heart attack and in 1996 her and Harold moved into Eagle Butte, where she resided until her death. Dorothy passed away at the St. Alexis Hospital in Bismarck, ND on June 16, 2011. She will be buried in the Eagle Butte Cemetery beside her husband Harold and grandson Chad.
Dorothy is survived by Charlotte (Larry) Lesmeister of White Wood, SD, Donna (Leon) Davis of Gettysburg, SD LaVonne Briggs, of Ft. Pierre, SD and Dale (Stella) Brewer of Eagle Butte, SD, also one sister Edna Strong, of Spearfish, SD, one sister-in-law; Otha Joens, of Mobridge, SD, 15 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harold, grandson, Chad Brewer, parents Hans and Alvena Joens, 5 sister; Henrietta Clifford, Ella Webb, Eva Womack, the twins, Lena Bell and Malinda Brokofsky, 6 brothers; 2 infants buried at Cresbard, SD, Hans Joens, Glen Joens, Raymond Joens and Robert Joens, 3 sons-in-law; Jim Gray Ernest Davis, and Walter K. Briggs.
Casketbearers are Doyle Simon, J.R. Keckler, Allen Ganje, Bob Joaquin, Bob Walters and Elmer Ray Berndt.
