Delores "Dee" Walters was born January 30, 1941 to John C. Cadotte and Sophia Iron Horn of Wakpala, SD. She was raised in Wakpala, South Dakota until she was in eighth grade, when her parents relocated to Gillette, Wyoming for employment opportunities. Shortly after Gillette, they relocated to Upton, Wyoming, where Delores graduated high school. Soon after graduating she met her husband, Ronald Gene Walters, Sr. Ronald and Delores were married on August 22, 1959 and together raised six children: Eddie, Gary, Keith, Ronald (Jr), Barbara and Bobby. Before retiring, Delores worked at several jobs including restaurant waitress, postal worker and hospital worker. She was famous among her family and friends for being a devoted sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, good cook, family historian and giving unsurpassed compassionate service to others. She had a passion for learning as much as she could about her family history and Lakota culture, especially spending time with her elderly Aunt Therese Martin and cousin (sister) Wilma Cadotte-Patterson. Delores and her husband also volunteered their time as Scout Masters for about six years and she also served as an advocate for families in the human services field. After raising her children and making homes in several states, like New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska, Delores moved back home to the Standing Rock Reservation in 1991 to be with her Lakota relatives.
In June 2007, Delores was ordained as a Deacon for the St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Fort Yates, North Dakota. Deacon Delores had a strong and active faith as she ministered in the Standing Rock Community and beyond. As a devout Episcopalian for all 74 years of her life, it was during her most recent retirement years that she was involved with spiritual services to the community, including children's ministries, attending Camp Gabriel as a Grandmother in Residence, volunteering at the Episcopal Church Food Pantry, hosting mission groups and church partnerships, and co-founding Elijah's Soup Kitchen. Delores's devotion for service to others also prompted her to visit hospitals to comfort the sick and pray with the families. She brought communion to shut-ins and served faithfully at the altar, especially when called to service by local community members. Beyond her service to family, friends and community members on the Standing Rock Reservation, she served as a member of the search committee to find a Bishop for North Dakota. She also served on the Standing Committee of the Diocese and Diocesan Council. She was also a Clergy Member of the Niobrara Council and as a representative to the Province VI Synod. Delores also assisted in the building of a church in Sioux Valley, Manitoba, Canada.
