Delmarie passed away Monday, June 24, at IHS Hospital in Eagle Butte.
Delmarie Claymore was born on May 12, 1932 to Robert (Pete) & Bessie Smith in White Horse, SD. Grandma Del was born premature and she was so small that they put her to sleep in a dresser drawer. Grandma Del's memories of growing up go back to Timber Lake where she stayed with Mrs. Georgia Poitras and also a family named Cummings during the summer months. She attended and graduated from the Old Cheyenne Agency.
On October 2, 1950, Delmarie was united in Marriage to Dewayne "Art" Claymore at the Railroad Depot of Timber Lake. All because two people fell in love, they were blessed with four children, Linda, Terry, David and Dean Claymore. Delmarie wanted to join the military and her parents agreed to meet the recruiter but her Mom wouldn't sign the permission slip. She then had various jobs, some including working at St. Mary's Hospital, C-EB Elementary and High School, C-EB Kitchen, the Canteen, BIA Facilities and Plant Management and put in 36 years at the BIA until she retired.
After retirement she enjoyed spending time with family, playing bingo, traveling and adventures with Twila, watching her Buffalo Bills, Nascar racing, baseball, boxing and rarely missed a news cast. She enjoyed doing special sewing projects for her family members such as regalia, ribbon shirts, as well as mending tears, hemming seams and sewing buttons. She enjoyed her plants, listening to the scanner, (calling us, when she heard our plates being run.) She also loved word search and reading the Rapid City Journal. She was a two time breast cancer survivor. Grandchildren loved her cooking especially her gravy and potato salad. Adam, as well as all her grandchildren, was Grandma's pride and joy, each had a special place in her heart. She loved to share stories about her grandchildren. Grandma's favorite sayings was "oh my". We will miss her warm smile and never ending hugs.
Her Lakota name, Wa Cante' Waste' Win, "Good Hearted Woman", which she exemplified every day. She was very generous, warm and friendly. She would feed all who came and they never left empty handed. Like the ones before her, she gave away and shared what she had, gifts from the heart. The grandchildren always flocked to her, Toksa Ake, Wa' Cante' Waste' Win (Good Hearted Woman).
She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband Dewayne "Art" Claymore at the Mossman Cemetery.
