Dean Shillingstad, 83, of Selby, died Monday, October 31 at the Mobridge Regional Hospital from complications of dementia and pneumonia. Dean was born on the family farm in rural Glenham on March 17, 1933. He was the thirteenth of sixteen children born to Perry and Agnes Shillingstad. He grew up on the family farm in rural Campbell County and attended rural schools. During his early twenties Dean worked as a bartender and loved the social activity it provided. His favorite bartending job was working for his sister, Caroline, and her husband, Ed Oxner, at their establishment in Glenham.
Dean married Phyllis Lappegard on October 28, 1960 in Pierre, SD. The couple lived in Mobridge, St. Paul, MN, Rapid City, and Sturgis during their first years of marriage. Dean worked as a painter during this time. In 1964 Dean and Phyllis traveled to Anchorage, Alaska after a massive earthquake devastated the area. While there Dean worked as a painter at Elmendorf Air Base. Later in the year, Dean and Phyllis relocated to Kent, WA where Dean worked as a painting contractor and the couple managed an apartment complex. Dean and Phyllis adopted their two children, Tina and Jeff, while living in Washington. He loved his children dearly and remained devoted to both of them until the end of his life. The family moved to Rapid City in 1971where they established D&S Painting and had the opportunity to work in multiple states painting hotels, apartment complexes, and residential structures. After retiring from painting, Dean and Phyllis moved to Selby in 1996. The highlight of his later years was working with his cousin, Ellsworth Skillingstad on the O-5 Ranch as a farm hand and cowboy because it reminded him of his childhood on the family farm. He was thrilled to ride horses again. Dean was a resident of the Golden Living Center in Mobridge for the final six months of his life. He was affectionately known by the residents and his family as the story-teller.

Dean was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Bob Cloutier, granddaughter, Grace Cloutier, parents, Perry and Agnes Shillingstad, brothers, Glen, Lyman, Norman, Roy, Lavern, Harold, Lawrence, Warren, Lee, and Edward Shillingstad, and sisters, Ramona Byington, May Schilling, Vivian Battest, and Agnes Hight.
