IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dave
Doan
August 31, 1946 – October 14, 2024
David "Dave" Eugene Doan, age 78, entered heaven's gates on October 14, 2024, in Rapid City SD at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital after a short battle of fighting pancreatic cancer. He was born in Faith, South Dakota on August 31, 1946, to Clarence and Florence Doan and joined two older siblings at home. Dave grew up on the family homestead in Perkins County north of Faith, South Dakota. When Dave was four years old the family moved to town so the children could go to school.
Dave attended school at Isabel High School and graduated in 1964. After graduation Dave moved to Denver, CO to attend architect school. After winter break Dave decided home was the place for him and he moved back to Isabel where he resided until his dying days.
After moving back home Dave enrolled in the Army National Guard in October 1965. He left for basic training in February 1966. During his seven-year term in the service Dave became the rank of Staff Sergeant. Dave worked in many different roles throughout his life. He worked for a coal mine out west of Glad Valley, worked and drove truck for UPS, drove the bulk truck for Locken's Oil, owned and operated Dave's 66 Service, worked construction for Loren Miller Construction, was employed with the South Dakota Department of Transportation, Lindskov Implement and finally until this past summer was employed at Premier Equipment all in Isabel South Dakota. Even after Dave retired from the state department he had to go to work as he had to keep his hands busy. He was known as the parts man around these areas and always on the phone getting those that needed something taken care of. We always asked him if he would fully retire, and he would answer with "and do what". So, he continued working until it became too much for his health.
Dave and Mattie Lou met at a bank Christmas Party that his bankers, at the time, told him to come to. It only took one dance, and the rest is history for them. It wasn't long after that first "date" that Dave was knocking on Mattie Lou's parents' door and asked her to marry him. They were united in marriage on May 15th, 1982. They just celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary this year. To this union Dave's pride and joys were born. First his son Clint Jay on February 7th, 1985, and then his baby girl Shanna Kay on November 19th, 1987.
Dave had a passion for woodworking and was always busy in his workshop building something. In the past few years, he has built countless wood toy barns with a corral set for each. So many boys and girls have these very special barns. He also built his daughter a very special Barbie Doll house when she was younger that took up a good portion of their living room. Dave could build anything if you asked him and would work away with the building plans drawn up in his mind.
Along with woodworking he had a passion for fishing. In his later years you could find him driving his side by side out to Isabel Lake to just throw a few casts in the water. BUT he was an avid catch and release so he would never bring home the fish to cook up.
One thing that Dave also liked to do was have his workshop open for this card buddies. You could always find four or five of his buddies playing their card games and shooting the breeze most afternoons.
Dave is survived by his son Clint Doan and fiancée Amy Taylor, of Isabel SD, daughter Shanna Miller and husband Wade Miller, of Gillette WY, Grandsons Chevy Miller and Casin Miller, of Gillette WY. Brothers Clyde Doan, Douglas Doan (Heather), and Clayton Doan (Kathy). Sisters Linda Watzel (Gary), Wendy Red Bear and Edith Grefsrud (Wayne). Brother-in-laws Del Marshall (Andree), Kip Marshall (Jamie) and Tipton Marshall (Connie). Sister-in-laws Kitty Lutz (Dave), Melody Marshall and Cindy Marshall (Lester). Aunt Donna Bertsch. Along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Welcoming Dave into the glorious heavens is his beloved wife Mattie Lou who had just passed four months prior. Parents Clarence and Florence Doan. In-laws Alfred "Swede" and Lois Marshall. Younger sister Janet Gehring. Sister-in-law Linda Doan. Brother-in-laws Kevin Red Bear and Clee Marshall. Nephew JC Garreaux. And numerous other aunts, uncles, in-laws, cousins and friends too many to name.
Honorary casket bearers are Dave's two grandsons Chevy Miller and Casin Miller. Dode Ley, Jim Bartlett, Class of 1964, Cheryl Boldt, Cindy Taylor, Iris Day, Monte Lindskov, Randy Deibert, Daryl Burke, Ralph Lyons, Daryl Pfaff, Phillp Lindskov, Dennis Lindskov, all the card and coffee crew, the Coal Springs Antique Club and along with all of Dave's family and friends.
Funeral services for Dave will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the Isabel Community Center. Burial will be held at the Hillview Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge, SD. Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM, Friday, October 25, 2024, at the United Church of Christ in Isabel with a prayer service to begin at 7:00 PM.
The family is asking if you have one of the barns that Dave had built to please bring to the funeral services to put on display. Dave was a dedicated family man, who was always there when you needed him. May the cards being dealt always be a winning hand, the fish be biting, the coffee good and give momma the biggest hug. Love you daddy, Shanna.
