Funeral services for Darvin Vilhauer, 79, of Herreid will be 10:30 AM Monday March 6, 2017 at Herreid Baptist Church in Herreid. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Herreid under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be Sunday March 5, 2017 at 5:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the church in Herreid. Darvin passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at the Linton Hospital.
Darvin Larense Vilhauer was born July 20, 1937 in rural Campbell County to Ernst and Mathilda (Holzwarth) Vilhauer. He grew up and attended country school east of Herreid, South Dakota. Darvin attended High School in Herreid where he played basketball for the Yellow Jackets and graduated in the Class of 1956.
On January 9, 1957 Darvin married Marilyn (Lutz) at the Artas Baptist Church in Artas, South Dakota. They began their life together farming with Darvin's parents east of Herreid. After Darvin's father retired, Darvin and his brother Steve continued to farm as Vilhauer Brothers. Darvin enjoyed his cattle and farming. He continued to be active until his health forced him to retire but continued to live on the farm.
Darvin was baptized and joined the Herreid Baptist Church on December 31, 1966. He served as church treasure, Deacon, church extension, men's brotherhood, men's choir, men's quartet, mixed quartet, church choir and sang with the Eureka Hymns Men's Chorus as long as his voice allowed him. Darvin was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2007 and Cancer in 2016.
Darvin was a "Farmer" and he loved to work and feed his livestock and was very fond of his dog and farm cats. He loved visiting, playing cards and having friends in to share a meal. Darvin also enjoyed fishing with his buddies and playing Horseshoe where he competed in State Tournaments.
Darvin is survived by his wife of 60 years; Marilyn of Herreid, one daughter Nola (Eugene) Schmidt of Hoven, SD, brother; Steven (Michelle) Vilhauer of Herreid, two grandchildren; Jamey (Sadie) Steiger; Brenda (Jay) Klein Knecht, one step granddaughter; Carrie (Brandon) Tennant, great grandchildren; Alexandria, Jacob, Jared and Joel Steiger, Taryn and Ethan Fergel, step grandchildren; Caitlin and Gage Carter and Kody Klein Knecht and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
