Funeral services for Corliss (Cori) Flying By, age 46 of Rapid City will be Saturday at 1:00 PM at the Elk Horn Congregational Church in Little Eagle. Burial will be in the Elk Horn Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Wake Services will be Friday from 6 to 10 PM at the Church in Little Eagle. Cori passed away Dec. 1, 2014 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Corliss Flying By was born on July 2, 1968 at Ft. Yates, North Dakota to Edison Sr. and Della (Flying By) Uses Arrow. Corliss attended Little Eagle Day School for a short period of time, then went on the Mormon placement program in Idaho until she graduated from High School. She moved to Utah in 1991 and attended Clearfield Job Corp in Clearfield, Utah. In 2003 she returned home to Standing Rock for a period of time eventually making her home in the sacred He Sapa Rapid City, SD until her time of passing she attended Sitting Bull College and majored in Criminal Justice. Cori worked at Grand River Casino as security, Prairie Knights Casino as cocktail server and First Dakota road construction as a flagger. Cori loved and enjoyed working no matter where she lived, she always found work to take care of herself and family. Cori worked until her health began to fail.
She had a heart of gold, and her smile made you smile. She enjoyed making people laugh. She took extraordinary care in her family, friends and took in others as her family.
She had a love for turtles and kept them as her pets. It wouldn't be a surprise when she would pull a turtle or a few from her pockets. Cori and her husband Shane enjoyed searching for and collecting rare stones. They spent many hours searching for them, also did research on the stones. She also enjoyed doing embroidery work, she made pillow cases, dish towels and little wall hangings.
When she came for a visit she would go for a walk in the woods collecting different plants, cattails, wild flowers and would make a beautiful arrangements for family members. She also loved traveling especially when she had the opportunity to travel home to visit her family, relatives and friends. Cori had many many many friends, where ever she lived her home was always open to anyone who didn't have a place to go she always made sure everyone was fed and full. No one ever left her home hungry, she was a kind hearted woman.
She loved her husband, children, and grandchildren dearly. Such as providing the best of every holiday and birthday for them. Everyone she knew was welcomed to her home which she kept very beautiful and took pride in. Her favorite activities were going to the casino and shopping at thrift stores.
She is survived by her husband Shane Eagle Elk of Rapid City, SD, two daughters Keysha Flying Bye, Rapid City, Reyna Moreno-Castillo, West Valley City, Utah, one son, Jeremiah Flying By-Overbaugh, Sioux Falls, SD and nine grandchildren
