Funeral services for Cora Sandmeier, 94, of Mobridge, SD, formerly of Glenham, SD, will be 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at St. Jacobi Evangelical Lutheran Church of Glenham with visitation to be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at the Glenham Cemetery under the direction of the Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Cora passed away March 28, 2015, at the Golden Living Center in Mobridge.
Cora was born on May 3, 1920, in rural Java, SD, to Reinhold and Magdalena (Schock) Horst. She was raised on the family farm east of Java, where she was residing when she met her husband, Rudy Sandmeier of rural Bowdle, SD. The two married in September of 1939 and the remained happily married until his passing in 1999.
They made their home on the Sandmeier farm for about 10 years before moving to Glenham in 1949. Cora spent her time maintaining the family home while raising her children. She also assisted her husband in building a gas station that they operated for 7 years.
Cora loved to garden, raise flowers, and quilt. She made hundreds of quilts in her lifetime, giving them as gifts and occasionally selling them.
She was known as a loving and caring person who always had time to visit with friends and family. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Cora is survived by her children, Stan (Peggy) Sandmeier of Mobridge, and Wayne (Michelle) Sandmeier of Glenham; her siblings, Priscilla Fadness of Walla Walla, WA, and Alvin Horst of Glenham; her grandchildren, Suzanne Sandmeier, Shawn Stickney, Tim Sjomeling, Michael Sandmeier, and Nate Sandmeier; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy Sandmeier; her parents; her infant daughter, Sylvia Jane Sandmeier; her granddaughter, Tracy Meyer; her siblings, Edna Voshall, Eleanora "Toots" Spiry, Viola Goetz, Marcella "Sally" Sannes, and Albert Horst; and her nieces and nephews, Dave Spiry, Darrel Goetz, Verlyn Horst, and Vitas Shehan.
