Funeral services for Clyde Three Legs, 64, of Wakpala, SD, will be at 11 AM, Friday, March 25, 2016 at the Wakpala Community Center. Burial will be at the LDS Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Everyone may meet at the two-mile junction at 9 AM. Open sharing will be at 10 AM Friday. Clyde passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2016, at Sanford Health of Bismarck, ND.
Clyde Cornelius Three Legs was born on January 17, 1952 in Wakpala to Abel Catch The Bear and Lorraine Jean Tiger. Clyde attended school in Wakpala and Preston, ID. Clyde participated in the Indian Placement Program in Idaho where he graduated high school in 1971. During his high school years he was active in basketball, cross country and baseball. During the summer months in 1971, he played for the Mobridge American Legion baseball team. They were called "Arnie's Army" after the coach. In the fall of 1971 Clyde started college at BYU. While there he participated in ROTC, Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track and Sons of Lehi Choir. He entered into the US Army on June 29, 1972. He was in the 5th brigade the "Eagles". While in the Army he was on the cross country team. They were undefeated and team champions. Clyde took fourth overall even though he had a hairline fracture in his foot. He was an US Army All-American in Cross Country. Clyde was the ADA company "Soldier of the Month" twice in back to back months while in Germany.
Clyde was honorably discharged from the Army on March 22, 1974. He returned to BYU and again ran cross country and track. He was also involved in Lamanite Generation. In 1975 he attended UTech aka Utah Valley University. He was the cross country club champion, turkey trot champion and bowling club champion. In 1978 he attended Idaho State University where he also ran cross country and track. He participated in the Big Sky Conference and ran at the district and regional meets. Following that in 1979 he went to Northern State College and ran cross country and track. He obtained his Bachelor degree on Dec. 12, 1981 in Sociology. In 1982 he attended graduate school at Mankato State University for Counseling. Clyde tried out for the US Olympic teams over the years.
After retiring from running Clyde began coaching. In 1987 he was named the National AAU Region XI Track and Field Coach at the 14 and under National AAU meet in Alta Loma, CA. He was also a Quest National Cross Country coach for a National Cross Country Camp held in Southern California.
Clyde is survived by his children, Jonathan J. Catch The Bear, Kaya Three Legs, and Kendra Walks In The Wind, brothers, William "Bill" Three Legs, Peter Three Legs, Thomas Three Legs, Vaughn Three Legs, and Ellen Three Legs.
He is preceded in death by his father, Abel Catch The Bear, mother, Lorraine (Tiger) Three Legs, adopted father, James Three Legs, brothers, Larry, Stan, Webster and James Three Legs Jr., and grandparents, John and Rose (Gabe) Tiger, Matilda (Catch The Bear) Three Legs, Henry Three Legs, Grace Looking Back and Bernard Catch The Bear.
