Funeral services for Chaz Culbertson, 30, of Minneapolis will be at 11 AM, Monday, December 12, 2022, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Ft. Yates. Burial will be date at the Culbertson Family Cemetery. An all night wake will start at 6 PM with services at 7 PM Sunday at the church. Chaz passed away Monday December 5, 2022 in Minneapolis.
Huska Maza
Chaz James Culbertson was born on July 5, 1992 to Carol Jewett and Harold Cunningham. He grew up in Selfridge, ND with his grandmother Sylvia Culbertson. He attended school at Selfridge High School where he loved to play basketball and was always on the courts in his free time playing ball.
He moved to Mandan at the age of 17 with his uncle Josh Carry Moccasin, His uncle took him to Pow-wows all over the place they traveled. Chaz learned to sing with the drum group and began grass dancing for three years. He also learned to speak Lakota so his Grandma Sylvia gave him his Lakota name Huska Maza.
In 2012 he met Shantel Bachmeier and they had a son KeyShawn Kamar'e Culbertson and moved to Baltimore, Maryland. He worked at Fantasy World where he loved working and spending time with his family.
Then in 2016 he came back to Mandan for two years but went back to Minneapolis, MN where he passed away on December 5, 2022 and he will be missed and loved but not forgotten.
Chaz is survived by his son KeyShawn Culbertson & his mother Shantel Bachmeier, Grandmothers Sylvia and Hazel Culbertson, Mother Carol Jewett and (stepfather) Myron Ironshield, Aunt's Valerie Jewett and Karen Culbertson and all his siblings Chavez Jewett, Henry Culbertson, Precious Jewett, Precious Jewett, Nefertiti Jewett, and Hoksila Jewett.
Chaz is preceded in death by his uncles Josh and James Carry Moccasin Jr., Earl Culbertson, his Aunts Annette Red Tomahawk, Cynthia Conica (Sitting Dog), his Grandparents Caroline Shoots the Enemy and Gladys Jewett (Culbertson) and Grandpa Albert Culbertson.
