Mass of Christian burial for Charlie Dunn, age 66, will be Friday, March 15, 2013 at 10:00 AM, MT, at the All Saints Catholic Church in Eagle Butte. Family & friends will meet at the 4 mile corner at 8:00 AM to follow in procession. Burial will be at St. Paul's Episcopal Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Charlie passed away March 11, 2013 at the IHS Hospital in Eagle Butte.
Ambrose Charlie Dunn was born on October 7, 1946, to Marguerite (Hiett) and Richard Dunn at the old Cheyenne Agency. He was the youngest of three children. He was raised around Ridgeview, SD. The family moved to Pierre, SD where Charlie completed grade school. He returned to Cheyenne River where he attended boarding school and stayed week-ends and summers with his sister Marianne Knight until he graduated from C-EB High School in May, 1966. He attended Brookings College until he was inducted in the US Army in October, 1967, serving in the Vietnam War, receiving numerous medals: The National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign medal and the Bronze Star. Charlie was honorably discharged in February, 1970.
After Charlie's discharge he worked around the Chicago and Sioux Falls area and then he returned home and began working for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and Si Tanka College. He was the Carpenter Instructor at Si Tanka. In 1997 he met and married Germaine Hill and they made their home in Eagle Butte. Charlie was welcomed into the home by her children: Leslie, Floyd, and Bobbie. He was known as "Uncle Charlie" to their six grandchildren. He named Chaney and Tryan "Naughty and Naughtier". Charlie was very patient with the grandkids, always finding ways to keep them entertained and instilling his wisdom into them. He was a child at heart. Charlie was well known for his outstanding carpentry skills and did many jobs on Cheyenne River. He was also known for his wit and storytelling.
During Charlie's last days he was cared for by his niece Frankie Lou Johnson and enjoyed the company of close friends, Ford Hill, Elroy Dubray, Rick Laundreaux, Eileen Bayless and welcomed anyone who stopped in to visit him.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Germaine Dunn and children: Leslie (Marty) Thompson, Bobbie (Cap) Pearman, and Shanon LeCompte. Grandchildren: Shawna, Claymore, Justin, Kimmie, Tryan and Chaney and great granddaughter, Kassie Gayton. Sister Marianne Knight and children: Deb Knight, Pete (Marlene) Knight, Nick (Trish) Knight, Patty Knight, Heidi Knight, D'Ann Knight Traversie. Brother Richard (Eleanor) Dunn and children: Dale, Gail, Bonnie, Elaine, Anthony and Ambrose Dunn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marguerite, and Richard Dunn, brother Jimmy Dunn, niece Jill Knight, grand niece Desiree Knight, stepson Floyd LeCompte, and his best friend Anthony "Curly" Johnson.
