Charlene Flying By, age 56, of Eagle Butte passed away Monday, May 10, 2010 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. All night wake will begin at 6:00 p.m. MT Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Cultural Center in Eagle Butte. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. MT on Saturday at the center. Burial will be in the UUC Cemetery in Cherry Creek. Arrangements are with Kesling Funeral Home.
Charlene Sylvia Horne Flying By was born in Rapid City, SD on November 23, 1953 to Althea Brave and Sullivan Horne. The second oldest of seven children, she grew up in Rapid City graduating from Central High School in 1972.
Charlene met Russell Flying By and they were married twice Russell said. He said they got married at the courthouse in Pierre, SD on January 14, 1975 then on February 2, 1975, he and Char were told they were wanted over at the church (UCC) in Cherry Creek. So they went over and a meal including a wedding cake was prepared for them and their marriage was blessed by Reverend Douglas Widow. Four children were born to Russell and Charlene, Elizabeth Althea 1975, Susan Faye 1977, Amy Louella 1980, and Chris Allen 1987. They lived in Rapid City, SD, Cherry Creek SD, in the 80's moved to Eagle Butte.
In the early 1980's -2009 Char worked as a Nurses Aide at the Ellsworth Air Force Base, Cheyenne River Housing Authority, Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe - Loan Office, Payroll Clerk, Water Resources, Payroll Assistant, Tero secretary and Lakota Technologies as the Payroll Clerk. Charlene enjoyed working, she retired in 2009 due to her health.
Char loved being at home with her family, especially spending time with her grandchildren. She also liked family fishing trips, reading (reading the book then watch the movie), and watching her TV programs. Caring for her many plants, playing computer games, and talk on the phone with family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Russell Flying By, two daughters, Susan Flying By and Amy (Chris) Thompson, one son Chris Flying By, seven special grandchildren, Conde, Braxtyn, Stacy, Maggie, baby Russell, Fanny and Angela. Two brothers Walt (Lena) Swan Jr. of Florida, Isaac Swan, five sisters, Carlene (Ralph) Byington of Missouri, Deb (Carl) Douglas of Rapid City, Cheryl (Glen) Bently of Rapid City, step-father Walt Swan Sr. of Pine Ridge numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Althea Brave and Sullivan Horne, infant daughter Elizabeth Althea, nephew Spencer Swan and sister Clarinda Horne.
