Catherine Lorraine Miner
"Tokahewin"

Catherine Lorraine Miner, "Kate" as she was known to many, was born at home in Whitehorse, SD on January 26, 1950 to Clarice V. Miner (Eagle Shield) and Rudolph Miner, Sr. As a child, she enjoyed riding horseback, reading, playing with her dolls, and spending time outdoors picking wild turnips, onions, chokecherries, and plums. She spoke fondly of waiting for her dad to return in the evenings so she could share her day with him. She would often spend time with her grandma and grandpa, Louisa and Ernest Makes Life in Little Eagle, SD. It was her grandma, Louisa, who gave Catherine her Indian name "Tokahewin". She had many, many stories about her life growing up in the country and would visit for hours about them. In her adult life, Catherine often donned a coat of many colors so to speak, she worked as construction worker, WIC program clerk, LPN, CHR/MCH, and as a Social Detox Coordinator. She retired as the Social Detox Coordinator for the Walter Miner Law Enforcement Center in 2002. Thereafter, she spent her time with her family and enjoying life as best as she could, even if it was just sitting out on her porch with her coffee and a cigarette telling stories from her childhood. In the summer you would often find her out looking for wild turnips, wild plums and chokecherries. She loved being around her grandkids and great grandkids, they always brought her so much joy. To her children, she was their beacon...their light, she will be missed dearly.
