Obituary

Mass of Christian Burial for Carole O'Neal, 62, of Eagle Butte will be at 10 AM, Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at All Saints Catholic Church in Eagle Butte. Burial will be at Mossman Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. A Rosary service will be held at 6 PM Monday at the church. Carole passed away, Monday, November 14, 2016 at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck.

Carole Ann was born on January 6, 1954, to Arthur and Eveline (Hodgkiss) Maupin in Pine Ridge, SD, the youngest of five children. Carole was the only daughter with four older brothers, Charles, Garland Sr., Terry and Leonard. Carole grew up in Eagle Butte, but spent some time in Phoenix, AR, with her parents, and in California with her brother, Charles. She also attended Stephan Boarding School during her early elementary school days. Eventually, she moved back home and graduated from Cheyenne-Eagle High School in 1972.

She married Michael O'Neal, in Pierre, SD, on October 16, 1972. To this union two daughters were born, Carmen and Jaime.

Carole started her working career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1978 in Eagle Butte, SD and transferred to Nespelem, WA on the Colville Indian Reservation in 1981. The family stayed in WA for one year and then Carole transferred to Aberdeen, SD, in 1982. After one year in Aberdeen, the family returned to Eagle Butte, where she worked for BIA, and remained there until she started her lifelong career with the Indian Health Service (IHS). During her tenure with IHS, she lived in Aberdeen, SD and Fort Yates, ND. Carole received numerous performance awards for her work ethic throughout her years of government service. Her time and dedication never went unnoticed.

She retired from the US Government after 38 years on August 31, 2016. Upon retirement, Carole moved to Eagle Butte, staying with Carmen, due to health issues. Fortunately, Jaime lived right next door, and they were all able to spend the last few months of Carole's life together.

Carole loved to spend as much time as she could with her two daughters and their families. She traveled near and far to all her grandchildren's activities. She seldom missed watching Shanee participate in cheerleading and Charlee participate in basketball and all their other extra-curricular activities. She was also very proud of her youngest grandsons Kel Robert & Charlie Lane. These two little boys doted on their grandma by sharing snacks, making her coffee and tucking her in at bedtime.

Carole was extremely proud of Carmen and Jaime when they completed their educational journeys; Carmen with an Associates Degree in Early Childhood and Jaime with a Masters of Science in School Counseling.

A few things Carole will be fondly remembered for was her ability to make the best of a bad situation, her directness in telling you exactly what was on her mind and what she thought of you, her sense of humor, and helping anyone less fortunate.

Grateful for having shared in Carole's life are her daughters, Carmen (Cody Dog Eagle) O'Neal, Jaime (Bart Ward) O'Neal, Jennifer Carter, LuAnn Bruguier, and her eight grandchildren: Shanee Ward, Charlee Ward, Kel Ward, Charlie Dog Eagle, Shelby Schock, Seth Stadel, Sheyenne Stadel, and Scout Stadel, brother Garland (Jennifer) Maupin Sr. and family, sister-in-law Sue Maupin and family, a goddaughter Dawnelle Martin Sobb and her lifelong friends Gail (Danny) Martin, and Charlie Ann Frost.

Carole was proceeded in death by her parents Arthur and Eveline Maupin, three brothers: Charles, Leonard and Terry, her nephew Tracy Maupin, her mother-in-law Georgette O'Neal and father-in-law Charles O'Neal, and her loyal companion, Cruz.
