Calvin Eugene Long Mandan was born on October 7, 1951 to Chauncey Long Mandan and Lucille Clown High Elk at Old Cheyenne Agency.

Calvin went to grade school in Thunder Butte and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte. He attended high school at Cheyenne-Eagle Butte and graduated a Cheyenne-Eagle Butte Brave in 1970. He played basketball, football and track and during his school years with C-EB he made friends that he stayed connected with throughout his life. Following high school he went on to attend 2 years of college at Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD.

Calvin returned to Cheyenne River and found work with various Faith and Dupree area ranchers; Frank Veit, old man Doug Dupris, Sr. and Merton Eaton to name a few. He enjoyed riding horses and offered his help to anyone who needed it. He often helped old man Doug break horses, brand cattle and after a long day's hard work together they enjoyed a good cold one. He also gave help to Merton driving the tractor to plow the fields.

In the last years of his life, Calvin spent a majority of his days with Frank Veit and his family. He helped Frank with chores or just rode with him wherever he went. They would leave early in the morning and would often return late. They may not have accomplished much but it was each others company that they enjoyed the most. Calvin enjoyed much of his meals with Eldora Black Eagle at her house up the hill. Most of the time it was chicken for breakfast, lunch and dinner but it was often the best meal.

Calvin enjoyed and loved all his relatives and friends. He was a gentle, quiet person who loved life and was always so happy to see everyone. Always ready to help anyone who needed his help. His door was open to anyone who needed a place to stay. Calvin will be dearly missed.

Calvin is survived by sisters: Edna Thompson of Dupree, SD, Alta (Vincent) LeClaire of Eagle Butte, SD, Judy (Walter) Hanson of Eagle Butte, Sharon Mandan of Wyola MT; Half-Brother: Danny High Elk of Eagle Butte, SD; Half-Sisters: June High Elk of Eagle Butte, SD, Lori High Elk of Rapid City, SD; Uncles: Robert (Janice) Mandan of Iron Lightning, SD, Duane (Rose) Mandan of Eagle Butte, SD; Sister–in-law Phyliss Mandan of Rosebud, SD; favorite nephews Alex Jiron of Rapid City, SD and Ralph Mandan of Rosebud and all his nieces, nephews, and cousins.
