Obituary

Mass of Christian burial for C. Dwight Schweitzer, 67, of Rapid City, SD, is 10 AM, MT, Monday, July 27, 2015, at Holy Cross Catholic Church of Timber Lake, SD. Burial is at 1PM, Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at Black Hills National Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge, SD. Rosary will be at 6 PM at the church, Sunday, July 26, 2015 with visitation at 5 PM at the church. Dwight passed on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at Ft. Meade VA Hospital of Sturgis, SD.

Dwight was born on June 18, 1948, to John S. and Maggie (Keller) Schweitzer in Mobridge. He grew up on the family farm near Glencross, SD. Dwight attended grade school in Glencross, and graduated from Timber Lake High School in 1966.

Dwight attended barber school in Texas in 1967, then enlisted in the United States Navy in 1968. Dwight was initially stationed in Adak, Ak, and then was deployed to Vietnam in October of 1969. He was assigned to the USS Benawah while in Vietnam. Upon his return from Vietnam, Dwight was assigned to the SS Edward McDonnell, on which he traveled around South America, stopping at many ports along the way.

Dwight was honorably discharged from the service in January, 1972. Upon leaving the service, Dwight returned to Timber Lake and married Linda Mahoney, where the couple farmed and milked cows. To this union a daughter, Melissa, and a son, Boyd, were born.

in 1986 the family moved to Rapid City where Dwight attended National College and earned an Associates Degree in Applied Science. Upon earning his degree Dwight worked for the Bureau of Reclamation in North Dakota as well as Banner and Associates in Rapid City. Dwight then went to work for the City of Rapid City in 1993 as a Senior Engineering Technician and retired after 20 years of service.

In retirement Dwight enjoyed gardening, making sausage, and helping with the fall harvest in Timber Lake.

Dwight is survived by his children, Melissa (Blaine) Wilkinson of Britton, SD, Boyd Schweitzer of Timber Lake, Shawn (Karla) Mahoney of Puyallup, WA, Kim Mahoney of Telluride, CO, Erin Janis of Norwood, CO, Joseph (Brandi) Epperly of Rapid City, Jessica Roe of Rapid City, and Jennifer Epperly of Rapid City; his sisters, Mary Anne (Emil) Biegler of Timber Lake, Martha Schweitzer of Rapid City, Marge (Ed) Volden of Forest Grove, OR, Phyllis (Ed) Cook of Plainview TX; his brother, Val (Sheila) Schweitzer of Timber Lake; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Cecelia Linderman, Kathleen Wortman, Harriet Schweitzer, and Dean Schweitzer.
