Borghild Sylvia Moland was born February 6, 1916, to Severin "Sam" and Gertrude (Mork) Moland in Colton, SD. In the early 1920's she moved with her family to Eagle Butte, SD. She was confirmed into the Lutheran faith in the Lutheran church in Lantry, SD. She was currently an active member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church and had been active in the WMF group. She and her siblings attended the Fairview country school where she attained an eight grade education. After this she worked as a "hired girl" for various farm families in the neighborhood. Hired girls did housework and milked cows if necessary. She was a survivor of the Great Depression and she learned the "waste not want not" philosophy. In 1936 she went to Illinois with her brother, Thomas, and worked there for six years taking care of elderly shut-in lady. She had relatives in Illinois and made friends there. She returned to SD in 1943 and was employed as a cook at the Eagle Butte dormitory for two years. During this time she met John Curtis and they were married June 6, 1946. They spent their first three or four months in a sheep wagon until the house John had moved in was ready to live in. This is the house they raised their family in and it was her home the rest of her life. Her faith, home, and family were the most important things in her life. She was an excellent cook, baker, and an immaculate housekeeper. Many people had a good stick to your ribs meal at her home. Her home was simple but it was her mansion. She and John were parents to three children: Marie (Bob) Berndt, Eagle Butte, SD., MaryAnn (Robert) Ernst, Glenham, SD., and George "Sam" Curtis, Eagle Butte, SD. John passed away March 29, 1969, and after that she and her son, Sam, continued on the ranch. She lived there with her son until January 26, 2010, when she suffered a broken hip. She has been a resident of the Golden Living Center since February 3, 2010.
She is survived by her three children, 7 grandchildren, 10 great- grandchildren, cousin, Florence (Mork) Halligan, and several nieces and nephews, and special friends Gladys and Andy Jochim.
