Obituary

Mass of Christian Burial for Bernard "BJ" Wasko, age 80, of Herreid, will be at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Herreid. Fr. Tom Clement will be officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 5 PM Tuesday with a Rosary service at 7 PM at the church. Bernard passed away Sunday, May 22, 2011 at his home in Herreid.
Bernard James "B.J." Wasko was born March 21, 1931 in Silver Lake, MN to James and Anna (Maresh) Wasko. He spent his childhood years on the family farm near Silver Lake, MN. He graduated from the Silver Lake Catholic School. He attended Mankato State College and earned a teaching degree in Biology in 1956. During his college years B.J. spent time in the US Army and was honorably discharged due to medical reasons.

In 1961 he married Deanna Knetel from Hector, MN and to this union four children were born; Robin, Angela, Kimberly and Jim.

B.J. started his teaching career in Minnesota before moving to Herreid, SD in 1963 to continue his career. He was a lifelong educator and retired as Superintendent of Schools in Java, SD. His education during his life continued with Masters Degrees in Biology, School Administration and Psychology. B.J. greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time at their cabin by the Point of View.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife Deanna of Herreid, SD, two sons; Robin Wasko of Sioux Falls, SD and Jim (Kelly) Wasko of Sioux Falls, SD. Two daughters; Angela (Rick) Hansen of Hot Springs, SD and Kimberly (Dave) Huff of Sioux Falls, SD, eleven grandchildren, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Anna Wasko, one sister: Marie Pokornowski and one brother; Edward Wasko.

Casketbearers are Barry Hansen, Shane Hansen, Joey Bezenek, Dillon Wasko, Forrest Wasko, Chuck Lavin, Mike Koeniguer and Dave Huff.

Honorary Bearers will be Chris Hansen, Clem Brandner, Dean Senftner, Dick Pokornowski, Cleo Schnabel, Alden Saan and Rick Hansen.

Joey Bezenek will be singing "Ave Maria" & "Amazing Grace". Congregational Hymns will be "On Eagle's Wings" & "Be Not Afraid".

Ushers will be Gary Horner & Bruce Brandner.
