Mass of Christian Burial for Arthur C. Jung, age 85, of Selby will be at 1 PM, Saturday, March 24, 2012 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Selby. Burial will be at Selby Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 4 PM Friday with a prayer service at 7 PM at the church. Art passed away Monday, March 19, 2012 in Rapid City.
Arthur C. Jung was born on November 6, 1926 in Trail City to Christian and Elizabeth (Diedtrich) Jung. He was a rancher in the Trail City area from childhood to the age of 18. At the age of 18 he was drafted by the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He made the rank of Tech 5th in Kawasaki, Japan with the 78th Engineer Combat BN. He was honorably discharged in November 1946.
He was employed in the Mobridge area by Hardcastle Trucking and Sackreiter concrete block and distribution. Art married Louise Jessop on June 14, 1948. In 1949 he purchased the Vet Cab Co. in Mobridge consisting of three cabs. In 1951 he went to work for the S.D. Highway Department in the engineering department. He retired in 1988 after 37 years of service for the S.D. Department of Transportation.
In 1993 he became a city councilman in Selby, and was in charge of the streets and alleys, and was employed part-time by the City of Selby as an engineer.
Art was a lifetime member of the Moose Club in which he served as governor, a 61 year member of the American Legion where he served as Commander, Past Commander, and County Commander and a member of the VFW. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Church Council, and an usher at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Selby for fifty plus years.
Art loved bowling, playing cards and Saturday afternoon darts.
He is survived by his children, Raymond (Barbara) Jung of Rapid City, Susan (Melvin) Melton of Pinedale, AZ, Christie (Tim) Allerdings of Cottonwood, AZ, James (Carmen) Jung of Norfolk, NE, Cecilia (Scott) Kolthoff of Viborg, SD, Linda (Eddie) Martinez of Cottonwood, AZ, and Laurel (Larue) Moak of Selby; 24 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise and one son, Michael.
Casketbearers will be Marty Ray Jung, Michael Dale Jung, Kulley Michael Morrison, Timothy Allen Allerdings Jr., Kristopher Earl Jung and Travis James Kolthoff.
Honorary bearers are all of Art's grandchildren and great grandchildren.
