ARLENE MAE JORDAN HODGKISS, 83, of Fort Yates, North Dakota passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2019, north of Fort Yates in a tragic car accident. Rosary services start at 7:00 P.M. at the AJ Agard Building in Fort Yates on October 3 rd , 2019. An All Night Wake will follow. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, October 4th, 2019 at St. Peters Catholic Church in Fort Yates. Interment will follow at the Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Kenel, South Dakota. After burial at Kenel everyone is asked to join the family for a feast and giveaway at A.J. Agard Building in Fort Yates.
Arlene was born on May 3
rd
, 1936 to John Jordan and Susan (Defender) Jordan in Fort Yates, North Dakota. She was raised in Old Kenel, South Dakota and Elbowoods, North Dakota. She moved to Fort Yates in the fall of 1978 from Kenel, South Dakota. She came from the Low Cap Clan of the MHA Nation. She married Leonard Hodgkiss Sr. in June of 1957. From this union she had seven children: Dean Hodgkiss, Madonna Gay, Leonard Jr., Ann (Ken) Grey Cloud, Arland Hodgkiss, Terry (Yvonne) Hodgkiss and Gail (Devon) Sharp. Arlene met Melvin Jewett and from this union they had two children, Jennifer Jewett and Joseph Jewett. She was a loving mother, dedicated grandmother and a great-grandmother. She was a true embodiment of selflessness, kindness to others, generous to all she met, and possessed unconditional love and compassion for all people.
Arlene had an amazing work ethic and was always either working or doing something for others. She worked for the Kenel Head Start, Standing Rock Chemical Prevention, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Bureau of Indian Affairs High School in Fort Yates, and with the Green Thumb program at the Standing Rock Elderly Protection.
For many years she spent much of her time visiting and helping Auntie Theresa Martin at her home in Fort Yates. They were devoted to one another. She loved spending time with her grandkids, going to the neighbors and to community events. She attended many services for family and friends over the years. When she was younger, she would travel to services and sing hymnals with her female friends and relatives. She sat up at all night wakes for many who passed on and could be seen sitting with the elder women who attended those services too.
Arlene is survived by her seven children. She is survived by her grandchildren: Homer, Natalia Klatt, Stephanie, Erin, Eric, Kent, Kort, Cameron, Kamie Moran, Jessie Buckley, Austin, Jonathan Joseph, Chloe, Riley, Bowdy, Delray, Marcella, Calvin, Lasheila, Jonathan Scott, William Taylor, Rebecca, Ashley, Joe Joe, Dawson, Alexis, Ashlyn and Joseph Isiah, Michael. She is also survived by her canine daughter Daisy.
Arlene is also survived by 46 great grandchildren: Ava, Aunika, Alana, Evan, Kenyon, Kaiyah, Kaliyah, Mateo, Mataya, John, Tate', Hepi', Waniya, Nycoy, Eris, Brynlee, Jeremiah, Brianna, Malakai, Neveah, Justin, Victoria, Jazmiria, Jay, Scarllet, PresLee, Winona, Kinlea, Addilea, Braylen, William, Theodore, Briar, Amira, Wanacha Wastela Zi Win, Zaryan, Demitri, Tyler, Kimora, Calvin Jr., Maliya, Mercedes, Allura, Luna, Aiden, Memphis and one unborn great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Susan (Defender) Jordan, her paternal grandparents, Arnold and Annie Jordan, and maternal grandparents, George Defender Sr. and Mary Packineau, her siblings Mildred Huff, Lucille Jordan Gayton, Alvin William Jordan, Delores Jordan Haskell, and Elsie Jordan LaFromboise. She was also preceded in death by several nieces and nephews.
