Archie Mitzel was born April 19, 1926 to Edward and Martha (Berreth) Mitzel on his parent's farm in Hague, ND. Archie was one of ten children. As a boy he attended school in Mound City until his completion of the 8th grade, after which he began working full time on his familie's farm.

On October 9th 1950, he married Rita Schaefbauer in Herreid. Following their marriage they made their home in Herreid where they spent the remainder of their years farming, ranching and raising their family. They would have five children. As the children grew he ensured that they were all well trained in the art of farming and raising livestock, and eventually one of Archie's favorite activities would move from being in the field himself to watching his boys work the land as he had done. He was jokingly given the title "The Warden" by the boys and his employees

In his younger years, Archie could be found doing what he loved most; working the fields, tending his livestock, and hauling milk between Herreid and Bismarck. Besides being a farmer, Archie was also a well known business man founding his own company, Mitzel & Sons, as well as partnering in the ownership of Herreid Livestock Market for many years. A knack that helped him with his businesses was his ability to remember anyone's name even if only meeting the person once.

Along side the businesses, Archie also enjoyed raising and showing horses and often made trips to horse shows or auction sales his vacation time. He also enjoyed traveling with his family, taking trips abroad to Germany and Australia.

Archie is survived by his sons, Don (Vicki) Mitzel of Aberdeen, Frank (Deb) Mitzel of Artas, SD, Rodney Mitzel of Herreid, Mylo Mitzel of Egan, MN, and Dennis (Loretta Gullickson) Mitzel of Herreid; her grandchildren, Peggy Mitzel, Robert Mitzel, Chad Mitzel, Stacey Lewis and Casey Kuck; his great-grandchildren, Brody, Gavin, Jeslyn, and Brayson; numerous nieces and nephews.
