Funeral services for Anthony Hand Boy, 66, of Eagle Butte will be 10:00 AM Friday, January 11, 2019 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Eagle Butte. Interment will be in the Blackfoot Episcopal Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Family and friends are asked to meet at 4 Mile junction at 4PM on Thursday, January 10, 2019 to process to the church for a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Anthony passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2019 in Eagle Butte.

Anthony "Tony" Handboy, son of the late Raymond Joseph and Madeline Lowdog Handboy was born December 24, 1952 in Old Cheyenne Agency, South Dakota. Tony was a direct descendent of the Itancan leaders LowDog (mother), Gall and Rain in the Face (fathers) of the Lakota and Dakota bands. He attended the public schools in Elyria, Ohio where he excelled at his academics at a young age was chosen to attend Oberlin College at the age of 12. Tony was a graduate of Foothills School for Culinary Arts in Los Altos, CA. Tony was a lifelong learner who attended and pursued his education by completing his G.E.D. and attended D.Q. University in Davis, California, he also acquired his CDL training and became Long Haul Truck Driver with R-n-R Transportation. Tony was involved in his Lakota religion and was one of first to Sundance at the International Sundance in Green Grass, South Dakota. He was an active defender of the Treaty rights of his Lakota Oyate and was actively involved in the American Indian Movement beginning in 1968 and throughout his life. He participated in The Trail of Broken Treaties occupation in Washington D.C. 1972. Wounded Occupation 1973, Custer Courthouse, Black Hills Treaty meeting conferences and more recent Oceti Sakowin Water Protectors in Standing Rock, North Dakota. His favorite saying was his father Raymond Joseph Handboy, "Manco ci la mita" and his Grandfather LowDog saying "It is a good day to die" when he participated when he participated in the Battle of Little Big Horn.

He married to Rolanda Red Bear in 1973, and they had 2 children Terrance Taylor and Toni Madeline. Tony also had a special friend Mary Chief Eagle who bore him a son Chance Chief Eagle. Tony had a generous spirit and humble personality, he was loved by many. His life was as testimony to his Lakota people that he would share his knowledge, stories and traditions without asking for any credit or compensation for his knowledge of the Lakota ways and his influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew him. He quietly departed this life and began his journey on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond Joseph and Madeline Handboy, a favorite nephew, Leland F. Logg (Joyce), brother Terrance Taylor, sister Sandra Yvonne HandBoy, grandparents Sophie and Abraham Lowdog and Joseph and Julia Handboy.

His beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of all his family: his children Terrance (Terry), Toni (Amie) and Chance Chief Eagle, Eagle Butte, Buffy (Mario) Eagle Chasing, Brothers and sisters Raymond Charles (Mavel) HandBoy of Marksville, South Dakota, Romona (Carl) Love of Lorain, Ohio, Madeline Joyce HandBoy of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, Faith HandBoy Lake, of Rapid City, SD, Margie (Matthew) Uses Knife of Eagle Butte, SD, Tony was a kind man acknowledged all his relatives as his own following the Lakota extended family tradition his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends are listed in an insert in recognition part in his life and theirs .
