Obituary

Funeral services for Anna Mae Reede, age 81, of Selby will be at 10:30 AM Monday, May 2, 2011 at the UCC Church in Selby. Burial will be in the Akaska Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 5 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM Sunday at the church. Anna Mae passed away Monday, April 25, 2011 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

Anna Mae was born to George E. and Esther C. (Woods) Lanning at Wagner, South Dakota on July 12, 1929. At the age of 4 they moved to the Springfield, South Dakota area. She attended school all 12 years in Springfield graduating in 1948. In the fall of 1948 she began her teaching career of 25 years. She taught in rural schools in Bon Homme, Yankton, Kingsbury, McCook, Sully, Potter, and Walworth Counties. The last 7 1/2 years were spent teaching in the Akaska School. After spending many summers taking college courses she graduated in 1972 from University of SD Springfield.

In January of 1974 she was installed as postmaster in Akaska, where she served for 23+ years, retiring on November 1, 1997.

In July of 1949 she married Everett Wells in Springfield. He passed away in 1978. In 1979 she married Arthur Reede and they lived on his farm south of Selby. Art passed away in 1991. Anna Mae continued to live on the farm.

Anna Ma has been a life time member of the UCC Church, being a member in Springfield, Lowry and presently Selby. She has held membership in SDEA, NEA, two postmaster organizations NAPUS and the League; Good Cheer Extension Club, Swan Creek Community club, Akaska Commercial Club, Selby UCC Women's Fellowship, and Medicine Rock Cattlewomen. She was also the Oahe Representative to the State Woman's Fellowship Board and the President of the Senior Citizens Center in Selby for many years. Anna Mae loved to sew, cook, knit, crochet and the outdoors.

Surviving Anna Mae is one son, Duane Wells of Akaska, SD; two grandchildren, David Wells of Yankton, SD and Dawn Wells of Sioux Falls, SD; five great grandchildren; brothers, Donald (Julie) Lanning of California, Edward (Maria) Lanning of Indiana and Lloyd (Sharon) of Lanning of Iowa; step-son, Larry (Helen) Reede of Selby; step-daughters, Lani (Bob) White of Rapid City, SD, Betty (Robert) Sawyer of Oregon, Patty (Alvin) Sudbeck of Yankton and numerous step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Esther (Woods) Lanning; husbands, Everett Wells and Art Reede; step daughter, Rosie Hoyles and two brothers, George Lanning and Lonnie Lanning.
