On the morning of December 14, 2016, Anna Elizabeth (Sandquist) Hagen (Granny Annie) passed away at the Mobridge, SD, Golden Living Center. Anna was 93 years old.
Annie was an avid card player, as Aileen Stavnes and many others would say, the most competitive spirit to win they've ever seen. She loved her cards and if no one was available, she'd play a game of solitaire by herself. If you came to Anna's home you'd better be ready to play. She loved cats and in her later years was unable to have one in her possession because of living situation regulations. She had an orange striped cat and she called him "Jimmy". She always talked about missing "Jimmy". Her favorite saying was "Jiminy Crickets". She was a great cook, especially of Scandinavian dishes, and she loved to do quilting as she donated many quilts to charities for fund raising.
She was born north of Firesteel, SD, to Edwin and Janabelle (Parrett) Sandquist on March 22, 1923. She rode her horse to country school daily about a mile or 2. She was very good in school as is proven by many early report cards. She completed high school in Timber Lake at an earlier age than normal. She worked in Timber Lake at an early age as a telephone operator, pulling and plugging in those connections for the early wall phones with the crank dial. She was married on June 4, 1946, to the handsome Arthur "Art" Carl Hagen who also grew up in the Firesteel area. To that marriage was born Arthur Dean Hagen Jr. in 1947, Michael "Jack" Gene Hagen in 1949, Joyce "Judy" Hagen in 1951, and Bonnie Hagen in 1956. After marriage, she worked at Thompson's Grocery in Timber Lake for a few years and then moved over to the Moreau Grand Electric and worked there as the payroll clerk for many years.
She will be buried at the Timber Lake Cemetery next to her husband, Arthur Hagen.
