Amy was born on March 25, 1992, in Bismarck, North Dakota, to Ardyce Taken Alive and Amiel Talks, Sr. Amy attended McLaughlin Public School from Kindergarten through 11th grade. After earning her GED diploma, Amy attended Sitting Bull College, pursuing a General Studies degree plan. Amy worked at Grand River Casino in Mobridge, and later moved to Mandan, North Dakota, where she worked as a restaurant server and a certified nurse assistant. More recently, Amy was a basketball official at McLaughlin School and a babysitter for her cousins.

During high school, Amy excelled in basketball, cross country, and track. After high school, Amy maintained her love for running and fitness, and developed a passion for officiating basketball games. Amid her health struggles this past year, she loved refereeing middle school, freshman, and junior varsity games at McLaughlin School. When she was not officiating games, Amy was at all McLaughlin basketball games, often recording game statistics on note paper. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her nephew Tyler Shane "The Boss" Schmeichel, and her mother. Amy was also an avid fan of four-star movies on Netflix. With her kind heart and gentle personality, Amy was friends with everyone. She greeted her loved ones with a soft hug and genuine smile.
