Obituary

Funeral services for Alice Kundert, age 92, of Mobridge and formerly of Mound City will be at 10 AM, Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the Mound City Community Center. Burial will be in the Mound City Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Alice passed away Monday, June 10, 2013 at the Mobridge Regional Hospital.

Alice Kundert was born July 23, 1920 in rural Java, Campbell County, SD to Otto J. and Maria (Rieger) Kundert. She attended rural grade school, Java High School and Northern State University at Aberdeen. Alice taught rural grade school in Campbell and Walworth County for several years before going to California. She served as clerk then general manager of a dress shop in Hollywood and a small department store in Beverly Hills for several years before returning to Mound City, SD because of the illness of her father. She again taught school in rural schools and Mound City Grade School.

Alice served as Deputy Supt. of Schools in Campbell County for one year before being elected to the office of Campbell Co. Clerk of Courts for three terms, following by four terms as Campbell County Register of Deeds. She also served as Treasurer of the town of Mound City for several years.

She was elected to the Office of State Auditor in 1969. She then served as Secretary of State from 1979 to 1987. At this time she ran for Governor of the State of South Dakota and was defeated. Following this she was appointed Coordinator of School Programs for the SD Centennial through the State Dept. of Education and Cultural Affairs for several years. She returned to Campbell County where she was elected State Representative for the 23rd Dist. for two terms.

She served as promoter, advisor, counselor, director, and later speaker at (TAR) Teen Age Republicans Camp for over 50 years. She also served as a counselor and for several years, keynote speaker at the National TAR conventions in Washington DC.

Alice also served with Maureen Reagan National Vice Chairman of the National Republican Party during the Reagan Administration. She also served on the Commission of Local Government; the SD Historical Society Executive Board; Heritage Center Foundation Board, the Black Hills Leaders Laboratory Board, The National Leaders Laboratory Organizational Board, also Exec. Sec. of Citizen's Responsibility International Board which was held in Ireland; the National Advisory Board to the Center of Western Studies at Augustana College as well as numerous other boards and commissions.

She received numerous National awards for her work with Teen Age Republicans; the National 4-H Alumni Award, the Doane Robinson Award for outstanding service to the State of South Dakota in preservation of South Dakota History; was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame, the Distinguished Alumni Award Hall of Fame from Northern State University; Honorary State Farmers of America Degree; Honorary Doctorate of Human Letters Degree at Black Hills State University; Honorary Doctorate of Human Service at South Dakota State University at Brookings.

Alice wrote articles for the National 4-H Magazine, the History of Governor Nils A. Boe for the book "A Century of Leadership" and various other Historical articles and histories.

Alice is survived by her sister, Lorraine (Bob) Slocum of Rapid City, SD, brother Roy (Gladys) Kundert of Alcester, SD and numerous nephews and nieces.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents Otto and Maria Kundert, four brothers, Gust Kundert of Illinois, Victor Kundert of Oregon, Herbert Kundert of Oregon, Otto Kundert of Virginia and sisters, Hilda Kundert of rural Java, Frieda Aman of Mound City.
