Burial will be at the Akaska Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Alice passed away Thursday, September 27, 2018 at the Selby Good Samaritan Center in Selby.
Alice Franks was born in Selby, SD, on Dec. 8, 1927 to Edward and Gladys (Coull) Franks. When Alice was a baby, the family moved to the west river Glencross area, before a bridge was built so they crossed on a ferry. She attended rural school there. As a child, their farm was near a snake hill, so many different snakes could often be seen. There was no phone or television, so books were read and riding horse was a good pastime. Her freshman year was at Timber Lake High and she graduated from Selby High School in 1946. Alice went to Northern States Teacher's College in Aberdeen and taught in the Akaska area. There was a teacher shortage because of the war, so one could attend summer school, then teach. Alice married Erhard Kilber on June 6, 1948, and they had two daughters, Louise and Lynda. She was a substitute teacher, taught a kindergarten class in Akaska, and did custodial work for the Akaska school. She was also a clerk in the Akaska post office for 42 years, as a sub for the Post Master.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Erhard; parents, Edward and Gladys; brothers, Paul and Donald; sister, Frances Larson; son-in-law, Kenneth Krell; and grandson, Eric Hoefert.
Alice is survived by daughters, Louise (Rick) Hoefert of Seneca, SD, and Lynda Krell of Sweet Home, OR, grandchildren, Gwen (Brent) Larson, Nathan (Melisa) Hoefert, Curtis (Julie Beamer) Krell; great grandchildren, Brianna and Cody Larson; sisters, Patty (Michael) Marolla and Emma Young; special nephew, LeRoy (Marge) Kilber; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and her Minnesota Family.
Memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church, c/o Eldor Schilling, PO Box 417, Akaska, SD 57420.
