Mass of Christian Burial for Alex "Smokey" White Bull, 53, of Kenel, Friday, March 9, 2012 at 11 AM CT at Kenel Catholic Church of Assumption. Burial will be at Catholic Church Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. All night wake will be Thursday, beginning at 6 PM CT with a rosary at 7 PM at the Kenel Community Hall. Alex passed away March 2, 2012 at the Mobridge Regional Hospital.

Alex "Smokey" Rough Surface was born April 2, 1958 to Alberta Left Hand - Rough Surface and Frank White Bull in Fort Yates, ND. He attended the Pierre Indian Learning Center until the 9th grade, but never finished school. Alex was an accomplished artist and craftsman. His paintings and beadwork were sold throughout Lakota Country and he respected his culture and traditional ways. Alex moved out to Yellow Thunder Camp in the Black Hills in 1981 where he helped set up camps. He was able to put up a tipi all by himself. Alex then married Sherry Means and together they had twin daughters Julia Rose and Twila Marie White Bull in July 1983. He was very proud of his girls and taught them how to bead, quill, and paint. He was very close to his sister Mari Jaine and her three sons.

Smokey is survived by daughters Julia Rose White Bull of Lawrence, Kansas, grandson Hoksila Ohitika White Bull. Twila Marie White Bull-Widow of Eagle Butte, South Dakota. Sister Mari Jaine White Bull of McLaughlin, South Dakota. Brothers and sisters, John Bubba Red Legs, Elaine and Pius Silbernagel of Billings, Montana, Ron and Clara Oxford, Henry Rough Surface, Samuel and Twila Rough Surface, Robin, Janice Rough Surface. Uncles, Douglas and Rueben White Bull. Aunts, Shirley Poitra, Elaine St. John, Germaine Demery

He was preceded in death by his mother, Alberta Left Hand Rough Surface.
