Albert Lindeman was born on February 3rd, 1928, northwest of Glenham, SD, the seventh of eight children to Jacob and Christine (Dupper) Lindeman. He was raised on his parent's farm in Walworth County, SD. Albert attended elementary school in Glenham and thereafter helped his father on the farm. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in April of 1946, after World war II was over and he was released shortly after basic training, receiving an agricultural discharge after his father became ill, unable to operate the family farm.
Albert married Betty Gunderson on June 28th, 1952, at the United Congregational Church in Mobridge, SD. They had two children, six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Albert's father lost both legs to diabetes and moved off the farm to Mobridge. Albert and Betty took over the farm operations and lived with Jacob for a year to assist him in his home. They bought the family farm shortly thereafter, working very hard to make the farm profitable. He and his father in law Alfred Gunderson, many times teamed up to help each other get a crop planted. In 1976, Albert asked his son Lyle to come back to the farm. They farmed together until Albert "retired". After his retirement, he still maintained all the fencing of the pastures and sprayed Canada thistle throughout the area. In 1994, he received the Wildlife Conversationalist of the Year award. In 1995, they moved off the farm and made their home in Mobridge. In July of 2016, they moved to Prairie Manor in Mobridge, and in June of 2017, to Elm Crest Manor in New Salem, ND, to be closer to their daughter Deb.
Around the age of 65, Albert started downhill skiing, which he continued until he was 84 years old. Albert became a regular at Terry Peak each ski season, with many looking forward to riding the lift with him. When you did ride the lift with him, all the employees would greet him with "Hi Albert!". His last ski season, he was honored by having his name adorn to a cake, for being the oldest season ticket holder at Terry Peak. Albert also had a passion for hunting pheasants, many called him dead eye. He enjoyed hosting hunters from all around the country, even into his 80's, you would hear many stories of Albert out shooting the younger hunters and running to the birds, beating the young bucks to pick up the pheasants, all to their amazement. Albert also enjoyed playing horseshoes and won first place in the South Dakota Senior Olympics. Albert always enjoyed working in his shop, he invested many hours restoring both a John Deere 60 and a model D John Deere tractor. As he retired, he didn't put down his passion for agriculture, as both Betty and Albert continued to nurture a large garden at their home in Mobridge. Albert also loved putting up Christmas decorations, still scaling his steep roof, putting up lights at the age of 80 years old. He also loved playing cards ("nickels") with his family and friends. Whenever one of his many grandchildren were present, he had an extra twinkle in his eye.
Albert is survived by son, Lyle (Nancy) Lindeman of Mobridge, daughter, Deb (Wayne) Helvik of Hazen, ND; grandchildren, Jenn Lindeman of Austin, TX, Scott Lindeman of Austin, TX, Ashley Lindeman of Black Hawk, SD, Jess (Janae) Helvik of Fargo, ND, Jenna (BJ) Etzold of Bismarck, ND, and Preston Helvik of Bismarck, ND. Great grandchildren, Zaidyn Lindeman, Noah Helvik, Lucas Helvik, Boden Etzold, Ingram Etzold and a new baby Etzold in December, and brother in law, Dean (Virginia) Gunderson of Hot Springs, AR, along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Betty, his parents, Jacob and Christine Lindeman, his seven siblings, Bertha, Milena (Millie), Alma, Alvin (Fritz), John, Ester, and Katherine, grandson, Brian Lindeman, in-laws, Alfred and Verna, brother in-law, Wayne Gunderson, and sister in-law, Nola Gunderson.
