Funeral Services for Albert "Al" Allmendinger, age 78, of Gettysburg will be at 1:30 PM, Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gettysburg. Pastor Daniel Tews will be officiating. Burial will be in the Gettysburg Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 5 PM, Tuesday with a prayer service at 7 PM at the church. Al passed away Friday, September 23, 2011 at the Oahe Manor in Gettysburg.
Albert Allmendinger Jr. was born on March 8, 1933 in Selby, SD to Albert and Margaret (Roesch) Allmendinger. He attended McKinley Country School and Selby High School, graduating in 1951. Al enlisted in the US Navy on June 12, 1951 in Bismarck, ND. He served as a Gunners Mate 3rd Class during the Korean War. He married Dorothy Lavonne Baer in Selby on Nov. 8, 1953. They made their home in Virginia until Al was Honorably Discharged on June 2, 1955. Following his discharge they lived in Pierre for a time where Al worked for the telephone company. They moved to Gettysburg where Al sold insurance and real estate for Hinkley Insurance. Al eventually bought the business and continued selling insurance and real estate until he sold the business in the middle 1990's. Al then managed the apartments for Costello. Throughout his life Al had several business adventures. In 2008 Al moved into the Oahe Manor where he had since resided.
Al was a member of the Gettysburg VFW and American Legion, Emmanuel Lutheran Church where he served as a youth pastor, and the Fabulous Forties Quartet that was formed when Al was in high school. Al loved music, he would sing, and play the guitar and the harmonica. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and woodworking, making things like a paddle boat and Christmas card lawn decorations and was a good cook.
Al is survived by two daughters, Jodi (Lynn) Moore of Humboldt, TN and Lori (Chuck) Governale of Fountain Hills, AZ; son, Rodney(Charlene) Kosters of Pierre; six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, brother, Leo (Genny) Allmendinger of Selby, and sister, Alma Diedtrich of Selby.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Dorothy in July 1997, son, Craig in December 1962, sister, Esther Kelly and brother, Raymond Allmendinger.
