Funeral service Agnes Brockel, age 76 of Selby will be 11:00 AM Monday, February 3, 2014 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Selby. Burial will be in the Selby Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be Sunday, February 2, 2014 starting at 1:00 PM with a prayer service at 2:30 PM at the church. Agnes passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at the Bowdle Health Care in Bowdle.
Agnes Lori (Glerup) Brockel was born October 14, 1937, to Dexter and Nikolena (Farstead) Glerup, in rural Campbell County, SD. She was confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church. She attended country school and graduated from Selby High School. Agnes continued her education at Northern State University and with on-line classes at Dakota State University.
On November 25, 1955, she married Harley Brockel at Bethany Lutheran Church. In 1956, they moved to Lincoln, NE where she worked while Harley attended aviation school. In 1957, they settled into their new farmstead in rural Selby, SD where they farmed/ranched until 1992, when they moved into Selby, SD but continued farming.
Agnes generously donated her time to a multitude of organizations. She was a 4-H leader for 16 years, served on several boards including: the Walworth Co and State Extension, Oahe Arts Council, Christian Women's Club, All School Reunion, Centennial book and volunteered at the Good Samaritan Center. She was a member of the Homemakers, Selby Lioness and Square Dance Club. She also tutored an adult reading student for six years.
Agnes was a member of the Bethany Lutheran and St. Johns Lutheran Church, Selby, SD and served on the church council, St Johns Centennial book and pictorial committees. She taught the Bethel Bible Series and Confirmation Classes at St. Johns.
Agnes enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, cooking and entertaining, decorating cakes, quilting, gardening, scrapbooking, reading, watching NFL football games and attending her grandchildren's activities. To celebrate their 50th Anniversary, the whole family went to Walt Disney World.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Harley, Selby, SD, two daughters, Rhonda (Jim) Van Den Eykel, Deadwood, SD; Beth (Gordon) Stormo, Summit, SD; one son, Brian (Jan) Brockel, Selby, SD; six grandchildren, Tyler Brockel, Bettendorf, IA; Jasa Brockel, Minneapolis, MN; Alexis Stormo, Fargo, ND, Casey, Brock and Abigail Stormo, Watertown, SD and one great-grandchild, Jaxson Brockel. Also surviving are three brothers, Melvin (Bobbie) Glerup, Highlands Ranch, CO, Edwin (Liz) Glerup, Apache Junction, AZ, Granville (Skip) (Donna) Glerup, Selby, SD, brother-in-law, Carroll (Jan) Brockel, Selby, SD; sister-in-law, Nina Brockel, Selby, SD; sister -in-law, Arlene (Joe) Burns, Hermiston, OR.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Dexter & Nikolena Glerup; brothers: Donald & wife Beanie Glerup, Robert Glerup, brother-in-law Donald Brockel, sister-in-law; Margie & husband Joe Kleven.
