Phyllis "Fudgie" Harris, age 91, of Mobridge passed away Tuesday December 10, 2013 at the Mobridge Regional Hospital. Phyllis was born in Mobridge on July 26, 1922, the daughter of William D. and Lily Zimmer. She attended school in Mobridge and graduated in 1940.
Shortly after Pearl Harbor was attacked Phyllis joined her sister, Doris, in Washington, D.C. to work for the War Department. She spent all of her career as an administrative assistant in Minneapolis, Carmel, CA, Chicago and returned to Washington D.C. in the early 1970's. Her last employment prior to retirement was with the U.S. Justice Department where she worked under the current U.S. Attorney General, Eric Holder. Phyllis possessed the strong South Dakota work ethic which served her well over the years.
After retirement in 1989 she returned "home" to live in Mobridge. Phyllis never drove so she could often be seen on her daily walks and especially visiting the pet store. She had a fondness for animals, particularly cats. Phyllis was married in 1949 in Minneapolis to Gerald Harris. She was later divorced.
Survivors include her brother, Eugene Zimmer of Alexandria, VA, her sisters, Rosalie Travis (Jerry) of Sun City West, AZ, and Kaye Vander Ven of Alexandria, VA and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Bill, Lyle and Jimmie, and sisters, Bonnie Scott and Doris Pooley.
Phyllis was a member of the United Congregational Church. A prayer service was held at 7 PM Thursday, December 12, 2013 officiated by Pastor Keith Kraft. Her remains were transported to USD Medical School, per her request, for education and research purposes.
